FEATHER AND STONE, CHAPTER 2: "TEACHERS"

This chapter is a flashback to Feather's first lesson in the witching arts- learning to read.  Don't take it for granted!  Language is liberation.

on creation stories: I'm fascinated by the blurry line between history and metaphor.  What we believe about the past says way more about who we are in the present than anything else.  For example, the Haudenosaunee creation story is about arriving to the world a helpless refugee and surviving by adaptation and the immeasurable generosity of other living things around you.  Colonization, on the other hand, always projects a self aggrandizing history of "inevitable" conquests, "unsolvable" conflict, and the "responsibility" to "civilize," (or in modern parlance, "democratize") which conveniently tends to justify taking whatever you want. 
History is only an "arc" to people who like shooting projectiles.
